- [New records of Diptera from the Hohe Tauern National Park (Austria), including information on flower visiting and the description of two new Black Fungus Gnat species (Sciaridae).]

Abstract:

Within the framework of investigations into the diversity and niche preferences of alpine and subalpine Diptera and into floral ecology, faunistic surveys were carried out in the Hohe Tauern National Park in Austria. Collections were made discontinuously between 1989 and 1999, with yellow-tray traps, sweep nets, and individual captures. Material from 4 nematocerous and 15 brachycerous families has been evaluated, and the results are presented here in an annotated faunal list. This list contains 286 species belonging to the following families: Acroceridae (1 species), Anthomyiidae (9), Calliphoridae (3), Chloropidae (11), Diadocidiidae (1), Dolichopodidae (13), Empididae (17), Hybotidae (25), Keroplatidae (2), Muscidae (18), Mycetophilidae (12), Rhagionidae (2), Rhinophoridae (2), Sarcophagidae (12), Scathophagidae (3), Sciaridae (63), Sepsidae (1), Syrphidae (57), Tachinidae (33). 27 species are new records for the Austrian fauna. Moreover, this work contributes to the knowledge of the dipterous fauna of the federal provinces of Carinthia and Salzburg. Flower visiting and hilltopping species are annotated. In addition, two black fungus gnats are described as new to science (Bradysia latipennis Menzel spec. nov. and Cratyna phili Menzel spec. nov.).

A new type of artificial substratum for sampling aquatic stages of blackflies (Diptera: Simuliidae) in fast-flowing streams.

Abstract:

Based on the detailed investigation of polyethylene strips used as artificial colonization substrata for drifting blackfly larvae by Pegel (1980a, b), Pegel & Rühm (1982a, b), Rühm & Pegel (1986a, b), a new type of artificial substratum suitable for conditions in fast-flowing streams was developed. The substrata faciliate easy and low-cost field sampling, with a quantitative correlation to drift densities of larvae. The new array consists of groups of bent wires, the latter being attached at one end to a concrete base. The colonization sections of the wires are positioned parallel to the current direction with one end free in the water and thus exposed in the stream. After colonization, the wires can be removed individually from the water without disturbing the larvae. The attached larvae are then swept quickly and completely off the wire into the fixative by means of a rubber ring with an appropriately sized aperture. The advantages, limitations and variations of the method are discussed in detail. A field experiment was conducted to evaluate the influence of current velocity on certain colonization parameters. An optimum curve is suggested to show the relationship between colonization intensity and current velocity. From variation in the individual numbers on specific wires of a group, it was possible to estimate from which part of the stream`s cross-section the drifting larvae landing on the substrata had originated. Models of the spatial distribution of the probable landing of larvae are discussed.

- [Nutritive base and population dynamics: The first instars (Simuliidae, Diptera).]

Abstract:

After the first instar larvae hatch, which is the initial input into the colonisation of flowing waters after oviposition by the blackfly females, the population abundance decreases. On the basis of laboratory experiments, some authors have suggested that there may be a high mortality among first instar larvae even under natural conditions. However, the proportionally long length of time taken up by the first instar within the entire life cycle does not indicate that the potential threat to these early stages is particularly great. Biological and ecological parameters, on the other hand, would lead one to expect a rapid development through to the following stages in order to minimise the effect of unfavourable environmental factors. Before the overall metabolism of the first and subsequent larval stages can be studied, the size of the nutritive base for a greater or lesser period of survival needs to be established. The investigation of this nutritive base (glycogen, protein, fat) is an essential preliminary step, and the present paper reports on the first attempts to analyse the nutritive base of first instar larvae of Simulium erythrocephalum and S. ornatum.

Zur Erhebung der Simuliidenfauna im Nationalpark "Oberösterreichische Kalkalpen" (Österreich). - [A survey of the blackfly species in the National Park "Oberösterreichische Kalkalpen" (Austria).]

Abstract:

During August and September 2000, an investigation of blackfly larvae and pupae was carried out in the National Park "Oberösterreichische Kalkalpen". It was another element in a series of researches into the aquatic invertebrates of the National Park, following reports on the stoneflies, caddisflies and mayflies, with the aim of providing a complete list of aquatic insect species within the region. The results showed that in an area covering just 0.2 % of the total area of Austria, 23 of the 42 Austrian blackfly species were found, which is almost 55 % of the total species number. The identity of the species was used for a saprobial classification of the springs, brooks, streams and rivers in which the research was carried out. Obviously, the fauna of streams and rivers is much greater than that of in the investigated springs and wells.

- [The blackflies (Diptera, Simuliidae) of Slovenia and Trentino/Alto Adige: Medical importance, control, distribution.]

Abstract:

The blackfly fauna of Slovenia consists of 28 species, from 37 sites. Only species belonging to the typical alpine fauna were found and no attacks were reported. From the Italian autonomous province of Trentino/Alto Adige, situated along the same geographical latitude, 24 species were found among which Simulium dolomitense is endemic in the Dolomites. The deaths of 136 cattle, 13 calves, 1 horse, and 1 pig in the years 1996–98 were mainly caused by Simulium variegatum. These deaths occurred between the middle of April and the end of August, from 700 m up to 1800 m above sea level. No losses through blackfly attacks have been reported since 1999, thanks to careful control of when cattle are put to pasture and their immediate return to their stalls when blackfly activity increased.

The site-specific distribution of Simulium reptans and Schoenbaueria spec. (Diptera, Simuliidae) in the middle section of the River Oder: intraspecific genetic similarity in the blackfly populations of this area.

Abstract:

Blackfly attacks on grazing cattle in the Oderbruch are caused principally by two species, Simulium reptans and Schoenbaueria spec., which here reach enormous populations. The development of strategies to prevent high levels of infestation on the cattle depends on basic ecological data on the distribution of the blackfly species concerned. By collecting the immature stages at their breeding sites in spring and the adults in early summer directly from herds of cattle and at a distance of one kilometre from them, it was possible to determine the distribution of the species. Their possible restriction to specific breeding sites was studied on the basis of genetic similarity analyses of adults and pupae. The presence of genetic subtypes, the number of which is different in each species, is discussed from the point-of-view of their genetic adaptability and in connection with the known local and Europe-wide distribution of the two species.

Colonisation patterns and population dynamics of Simulium noelleri Friederichs, 1920. - [Besiedlungsmuster und Populationsdynamik von Simulium noelleri Friederichs, 1920.]

Abstract:

The densities and vertical distribution of eggs, larvae and pupae of Simulium noelleri Friederichs, 1920, were recorded at a dam which was used to regulate the water level of several fishfarming ponds. This surface-release habitat was investigated from July to October 1993 by sampling blackflies in defined zones of the dam. The highest densities were recorded close to the top of the dam, sometimes reaching about 170 individuals per cm2. Densities decreased further down the dam, but it was evident that zonal choice varied with larval age. More than 80 % of all young to mediumaged larvae were recorded not more than 15 cm down from the top of the dam. On the other hand, most of the eggs were deposited at deeper zones. The highest numbers were found at depths of about 20-35 cm. The distribution of newly hatched larvae (L1), which mainly colonised depth zone Z2 (10-15 cm in depth), suggests that L1 migrate soon after hatching. In contrast to this upward migration, at least some of the last larval instars seem to switch to deeper regions, as comparatively high numbers of L7 as well as pupae were recorded in the deepest zones. The vertical distribution of S. noelleri in this habitat is discussed in terms of the hydrological situation. We conclude that the preferred zones for filter-feeding are the top 10 cm of the dam, where flow and nutrition should be optimal. High locomotive activity thus seems to be necessary in newlyhatched larvae to reach these preferred zones. However, comparatively high densities of L7 and pupae were recorded in deeper zones. Since these zones are not continuously covered by water, it is suggested that at least pupae may be able to develop in moist air only. Whether L7 actively migrate down the dam cannot be decided on the basis of our data.
